The back of a watch can be created simply or it can involve eloquent designs which reflect the mechanics and intricate detail that goes into creating a wristwatch. In fact many high end wristwatch manufacturers are incorporating these into a select few designs in their range.
The story behind display backs
Historically, many vintage Rolex watches used the traditional snap-on cases which allow the wearer to change the battery if needs be. The Rolex Bubbleback is another popular wristwatch from the 1930s that had a plain back, which made it perfect for engraving personal names onto before giving it to a loved one as a keepsake.
Modern Rolex watches such as the GMT Master II can be customised to have sapphire display backs which can add an enchanting touch to the classic silver wristwatch. Made with steel and designed to be water resistant up to 100 metres, the sapphire display back is an elegant touch to an otherwise sturdy and dependable watch.
Customise your display back
It’s possible to get your Rolex watch fitted with a customised back if you want to embellish it and as it’s fairly easy to install, all you need to do is know which parts to order and then have the parts fitted. Thomas Preik is one wristwatch designer who has custom display backs including clear backs and sapphire display backs which make an ideal addition to your luxury wristwatch.
Other types of watch display backs include the use of a symbol or logo synonymous with the manufacturer. Bell & Ross did this well by incorporating the ‘&’ symbol onto the back of their watch. Meanwhile Rolex have managed to combine both functionality and aesthetic value in their latest Milgauss range.
Practical and beautiful
Rolex Milgauss 116400
Take for example the Rolex Milgauss 116400which integrates the highest level of engineering in its inner case to shield the watch’s magnetic fields. It does this by having its inner case being made from ferromagnetic material followed by a container and then having another cover being tightly screwed to it. This means there’s only the bare minimum of openings, i.e. the dial and the case. The antimagnetic appeal is why Rolex has stayed at the cutting edge of luxury wristwatches; by taking every part of the watch into account when it comes to defining accessibility and ease of comfort for the wearer.
Of course sometimes it’s not always necessary to decorate the back of the watch and many manufacturers know this which is why they use a plain metal backing. This could be because it’s not practical to see the mechanics of the watch – while it may be fascinating, it’s not exactly the prettiest thing to see!
If on the other hand it does fascinate you to see the inner workings of your watch, you can always opt for a clear backing. The Omega Speedmaster has a clear transparent back so you can watch the mechanics in motion as time ticks on.
There are a wide range of options available to suit your style preferences, so whichever one you decide on you can tell the time knowing that your watch is as beautiful to look at on both sides as it is functional.
